Levant Climate Energy and Environment Lead at FCDO

Ruba Al Zubi is a staunch advocate for green economy and sustainability mainstreaming. She enjoys over 22 years of experience in policy development, private sector engagement, youth and women empowerment, social impact and green innovation and entrepreneurship.

During professional journey, Al Zubi served as the first Policy Director at the Ministry of Environment, established and led several departments at the Development and Free Zones Commission and served as the Chief Executive Officer of EDAMA Association, the first Jordanian business association in the green technology sector. Ruba also led the Clean Technology Sector Development component at USAID Jordan Competitiveness Program that aimed at enhancing private sector’s competitiveness, creating jobs and increasing exports in the green tech clusters. Al Zubi served as the Advisor for Science Policy and Program Development to the President of the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and led the Scientific Research Department at Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation. Through that post, Ruba oversaw Shoman’s Scientific Research Support Fund, Arab Researchers Award as well as science-based Innovation program. 

Al Zubi has recently joined the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) as the Levant Regional Lead for Climate, Energy and Environment.

Ruba is a recognized global leader and was selected as Jordan’s Eisenhower Fellow for 2012, Common Purpose Global Leader for 2024, and as one of the United Nations Foundation’s Protectors of Progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ruba is a co-founder of Jordan Green Building Council and was selected and serves on the board of several startups and non-profits in Jordan and the MENA region.

Al Zubi is a believer in the power of communication and shares her insights on sustainable development, science, innovation and green economy in several national, regional and international platforms. She is an eloquent speaker and moderator and is the curator and host of the “Sustainability in the Next Era – MENA” Conversation Series that discussed the potential for green recovery and sustainability in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Ruba holds a M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and is a certified Project Management for Development Professional (PMD Pro). She was exposed to environmental and climate change policy and institutional frameworks within MENA, Europe, the UK and USA contexts throughout her experience. 

Al Zubi is a trainer and mentor for a number of startups and innovators and enjoys a wide network of professionals from all around the globe. Her restless efforts in promoting clean energy in Jordan were recognized as she was a finalist in the 2020 C3E International Woman of Distinction Award.
